02-Outdoor Living |
Design brief/Outcome
The existing double brick home had a low single pitch steel patio, this let no light in the north eastern elevation and was also ready to fall over. We wanted the space to be open and also allow the existing home to access light/ventilation. The space was to provide a much needed connected outdoor living, as this is where the majority of occupation of the home occurs. The marine ply ceiling varies in height from 2.1 in the southwest to 3.9m in the north east allowing lots of morning light in year round. A courtyard has been created with a raw concrete block wall built around an existing frangipani plus the inclusion of two Japanese weeping maples makes for a good place to unwind. The surfaces of the building are predominantly ply with a HDG steel structure allowing for the large unsupported spans. The patio has intergrated well with the home and looks great with the late afternoon sun on ply wall. The space would benefit from the addition of closable wall panels for winter. |
